Starting a Mall Cart or Kiosk Business

Mall Kart, Starting a Mall Cart or Kiosk BusinessStarting a mall cart or kiosk business can be a fantastic way to enter the retail space without having to make too large of a commitment. The reason is because mall carts and kiosks can be exposed to many shoppers in malls, however, they are not charged the expensive rates that normal stores are charged in malls.

Kiosks are often charged just a few thousand dollars in rent, or 15 percent of sales per month. Also, to get into a mall, the initial fee, or “key money” is often only around $1,500. For many small businesses, this amount of money is actually manageable, whereas the significantly larger sums needed to open a normal store may not be.

Here are some tips for starting a mall cart or kiosk business.

1. Find a great location

Malls can be very large, and some areas may receive a significantly heavier amount of foot traffic than other areas. To optimize success, it is crucial that your kiosk business, or mall cart is located in a heavily traveled area. This could mean a main hallway in the mall, outside a popular store, or even close to the food court.

The more people who walk by your kiosk, the better, because this can increase the chances of people stopping at it.

2. Have an excellent product display

Kiosks and mall carts have significantly less room available to display products than their larger, big box store counterparts. This means that you have to use all available space well, and make your display exciting, interesting, and very neat.

Whether you are selling jewelry or stuffed animals, it is important that your products are displayed in a way that is very easy for customers to peruse them. Of course, if you are selling jewelry, display cases will be need to prevent theft. But make sure that your display looks professional, organized, and well-lit, if possible. Also, make sure to prioritize your top-selling items in your display.

3. Effective Salespeople

This includes both you and your staff, if you will be hiring one. It is very important for salespeople at kiosks to be friendly, professional, and proactive. Many people in malls already know where they headed, and have no plan to stop at a kiosk.

Because of this, it can be helpful if your sales people can try to engage people walking by. Of course, they should not do this too aggressively. However, inviting people to look at products, or simply starting a conversation with passersby can be helpful for generating sales.

Kiosks and mall carts can be great businesses if they are done correctly. Following these steps can help you on your way to building a great kiosk or mall cart business!
