Preventing Retail Theft

Retail Theft, Preventing Retail TheftShoplifting can be an incredible thorn in the side of retailers. In 2015, losses from shoplifting were so significant, that they amounted to 38% of total retail inventory losses. These losses translated to $32 billion dollars for retailers.

This means that shoplifting is a very serious problem, and retailers need to know how to defend against it. Otherwise, they could stand to lose serious amounts of money. Here are some great anti-shoplifting tips to help store owners prevent retail theft.

1. Make sure employees are always patrolling the store

If people in the store see employees constantly walking around, then this can discourage shoplifting. The reason is because it will increase the chances that they will get caught.

Shoplifting is much easier if thieves know exactly where all the store’s employees will be. Having at least a couple employees walking around the store will make it harder for thieves to operate without detection. The harder it is for thieves to get away with shoplifting, the less likely they will be to try to do it.

2. Use anti-theft equipment

Security cameras, security towers at entrances, convex mirrors, and anti-theft tags on merchandise can all be extremely helpful for cutting down the levels of shoplifting in your store. This equipment makes the prospect of shoplifting much less appealing. Security cameras can dramatically increase the chances of getting caught.

Convex mirrors positioned at corners help to eliminate blind spots. Finally, anti-theft tags and security towers at entrances can sound an alarm if a person attempts to exit the store while carrying and un-paid for item.

3. Make the most commonly stolen and desired items the hardest to steal

You can do this by putting them in open areas that are positioned right near an employee. These items can include expensive jewelry, electronics, or other similar items. Many retail stores also use glass cases so that customers can see the items but need to request that an employee bring them out to show them.

This anti-shoplifting tip can help to prevent customers simply walking by and snatching an expensive item and putting it in their purse or pocket. Using glass cases and positioning desirable items right near employees can both be a major help in preventing shoplifting.

4. Make sure your customers have to walk through the checkout area to exit

If customers have to walk through the checkout area in order to exit the store, it gives employees the opportunity to get a good look at them. This can make it significantly riskier for shoplifters to attempt to participate in theft at retail stores. It also increases the chance that anti-shoplifting tags will trigger an alarm.

If exits are placed far away from the checkout area, where customers can easily slip out undetected, then that makes it easier for thieves. So, instead, always make sure people have to walk through the checkout area to leave the store.
