4 Things a Restaurant Manager Should Never Do

Restaurant Manager, 4 Things a Restaurant Manager Should Never DoBecause a restaurant manager is a leader at the business, his or her actions and behavior have larger implications at the company than most of the other employees’. For this reason, it is important that the people who are managing a restaurant always behave professionally. Here are some things that a restaurant manager should never do while participating in restaurant management.

1. Yell at employees or customers

To run a successful restaurant, the manager needs to make sure that both his or her team, and his or her customers feel comfortable in the restaurant environment. For this reason, he or she needs to be make sure that he or she does not yell.

Yelling can make employees feel resentful toward the manager, and uncomfortable. Employees may be more likely to quit if they are being yelled at. Similarly, if a manager ever raises his or her voice while dealing with a customer issue, that customer will probably never return to the restaurant. So, managers need to make sure they always speak at reasonable volumes.

2. Ignore customer complaints

Customer complaints can be tedious to deal with for restaurant managers. However, they also shed light on all of the things that the restaurant needs to improve on. So, even though complaints are annoying and frustrating, mangers need to make sure they learn from them and do not ignore them.

Otherwise, more customers will likely just make the same complaints in the future, and the restaurant could lose business because of the issues. It is better just to listen to the complaints and deal with them as they arise.

3. Punish or lecture employees in front of customers

If the people in charge of managing a restaurant punish employees in front of customers when mistakes are made, then this can be very uncomfortable for the patrons of the restaurant.

For example, if a busboy is thirty minutes late for the third time in a week, then it is not a good idea to go and confront him about this while he is bussing a table during your busiest hour. Instead, wait until things have calmed down a little bit and talk to him in the kitchen, or in an office where it is not going to cause a scene. This is a much better way to deal with the issue.

4. Be consistently late or absent

Just as most people in restaurant management want their employees to be on time, and to follow the rules, the employees also want the managers to follow the rules. The reason is because employees can become resentful if they are expected to do things that the managers openly don’t do, and get away with.

So, it is better to simply be punctual, and to set a good example for your employees. The employees will notice this, and will most likely be more inclined to be punctual themselves if they see you doing the same.

Being an exceptional restaurant manager can be challenging, and can take years of practice. However, avoiding these things that a restaurant manager should never do can help you on your way to success!
